One of a Kind Things to Do in San Francisco

Did you know we have a Wave Organ? A what? Well, it’s nature’s ultimate outdoor concert! Okay, it’s a bit more subtle than that. The Wave Organ was conceptualized by Peter Richards and created in collaboration with George Gonzales, a master stone mason and sculptor, and built from old street remnants and ornamentation from an old cemetery. It is a wave-activated, acoustic (even percussive) sculpture built on a jetty in the Marina district in San Francisco.

At the water’s edge, the Wave Organ elaborate, patchwork – A juxtaposition of stone, cement and PVC pipe and is constructed in a way that allows it to be “played” by the rising tides and rhythmic waters. An often windy adventure for those looking for unusual things to do in San Francisco. Best at high tide!

“I really ask people, if they ask me, to just sit and listen in general. Don’t worry about what particular note that the Wave Organ is playing at that point, but to look at, to listen to it in the context of the ambient sounds… really consider the total sound environment of the Wave Organ, and to enjoy THAT symphony.”  – Peter Richards, Wave Organ Imagineer
