How will your pots brighten the patio?

How will your pots brighten the patio?

Gardening is one of the age-old practices that’s been gaining more and more popularity. As you settle into your new home after a move, you may find the space available to dig in the dirt is at a premium. Unfortunately, homeowners often have the desire to garden, but lack the space to cultivate proper growth. We have some great news! Gone are the days of being left behind while the garden express leaves the station just because your space is small! Whether you live in a condo with a small stoop or a home with limited yard space, this blog post is for you. Here are seven unique and non-traditional ways that any green thumb can bring a container garden to life without leaving the front porch.

1.      Old tool box: A rusted or aging toolbox is a perfect substitute for traditional planters. The toolboxes will add character and dimension to your garden oasis.

2.     Wheel barrows and red wagons: Old garden equipment and vintage toys make for unique garden features both on a lawn or perched on a porch or balcony. Simply fill the vessel with potting soil and your desired plants and voila! Instant garden! Be sure to take the size of your vessel into consideration and make a large barrow or wagon the focal point of the garden.

3.     Vintage tea cups & pots: Thrift shops are a perfect place to look for old cups and breakables that could be used as small features within your porch or balcony garden. Consider filling a few cups with soil and succulents and placing them sporadically between the other plants and planters.

4.     Galvanized buckets and trash cans: Galvanized buckets can be purchased for minimal cost at any hardware store and they’re a great alternative to the typical planters used in gardening. Try purchasing buckets in different shapes and sizes for a multidimensional look that will be effortless to achieve.

5.     Aged furniture: Old dressers or desks are perfect for compact gardening. Open and fill each drawer with soil and plants for an interesting “Secret Garden” type atmosphere. Additionally, gardening in an old desk or dresser can help achieve a layered and multi-tiered look in your garden while also saving patio space by building height instead of width.

6.     DIY stone planters: Using slabs and slivers of larger stones, either leftover from other DIY projects or found in your travels, and a small amount of quick setting cement, you can create a rugged and rustic series of planters for  a triumphant do it yourself project!

7.     Classic terracotta and decorative pots: Of course, the classic terracotta pot will always be a go-to in gardening, but there are ways to spice it up. Consider using tomato planters to create a multi-leveled garden feature, or perhaps glue old sea glass or broken mirror pieces on to create a pot that has a mosaic look and feel. Either way, the terracotta pot can be a classic and beautiful small garden solution.

Try these fun twists on the traditional ideas for planting in pots and be sure to let us know how your garden grows. Happy Planting!
